What Is A Graft/ Hair Follicle?

A graft is largely a bunch of hair that grows in a grouping of 1-4 hairs. Naturally, length hair could look like a single hair strand but when they are trimmed short it is noticeable that multiple hairs are present in a single graft.

The hair follicular unit/graft consists of a small group of hair follicles, along with nerves, vessels, and tiny muscle called erector pilorum. On average 1000 grafts are equal to 2500 hair follicles.

How many grafts do an individual need for a hair transplant?

That depends upon the following factors:

Density

It most commonly depends on the space that needs to be transplanted. As in the frontal area, the maximum density is provided to give you a fuller and natural look whereas in the middle and the crown area, we can adjust the grafts according to baldness or hair loss.

Density

Ideally, in the frontal area, the requirement of graft is 50-55 grafts /sqcm giving you a high density of hairs. But in the crown area, because of less visibility, a density of 40-45 graft/sqcm can be given which covers the baldness to some extent but would not give a fuller look.

Grade of baldness

The Norwood scale has seven parameters for the Hair Transplant process by which we can measure the grade of baldness. Every stage measures the intensity and pattern of hair loss or baldness.

Grade of baldness
  • Stage 1. No vital hair loss or receding hairline.
  • Stage 2. The hair around the temples has become slightly stagnant. This is often additionally referred to as an adult or mature hairline.
  • Stage 3. When the primary signs of clinically significant balding emerge, the hairline recedes dramatically at both temples that form an M, U, or V shape. The recessed spaces result in either hairless or sparsely-haired.
  • Stage 3 vertex. The hairline remains on stage 2, but there is a substantial hair loss or baldness on the top of the scalp (the vertex).
  • Stage 4. At this stage, the recession of the hairline is more pronounced in comparison with stage 2 where there is a scant vertex or no hair on the top of the scalp. A band of hair separates the two areas of hair loss that joins the remaining hair on both sides of the scalp.
  • Stage 5. In comparison to stage 4, the two areas of hair loss are greater. They're still apart, but there's a thinner strip of hair between them now.
  • Stage 6. The balding patches at the temples merge with the balding area on the top of the head.at the point of intersection, The hairband across the top of the head has vanished or is sparse.
  • Stage 7. It is the most advanced stage of hair loss where only a band of hair remains. The hair on the sides of the head is still there. This type of hair is frequently sparse, and you might be alright.

The Norwood scale A

This variant of the Norwood scale is somewhat distinct and unusual. Most importantly, the hairline recedes consistently without leaving an island of hair in the middle, as well as no bald spot at the vertex. Instead, the hairline runs straight from the front to the rear.

Men and women, nowadays, are experiencing a disorder known as androgenetic alopecia that strongly affects hair density and volume. After puberty, men might be noticing the receding hairline anytime whereas it is less commonly visible in women.

Receding hairline in men can additionally create a deep ‘M’ Shape if the hair falls dramatically at the temples.

FAQs

There are no corporal boundations. A person can resume his/her work the next day onwards.
As this is a minimally invasive system with a considerably shorter recovery time, there are no side effects involved unless a patient has any medical history.
We need to trim the donor and receiver sections to get the procedure result-oriented. In the initial grades of baldness, complete trimming may not be required.
An individual can join duties immediately from the next day of Hair loss treatment.

Usually, a five days medicine course is given or as prescribed by the practitioners.

After transplantation, it is not mandatory to wear a cap. You can wear it if you wish so.

Some lumps are apparent on embedded areas for the first 8-10 days, but you can wear a hat to cover that if you want to.

A person should be 21 to 60 years of age, provided you are medically fit for a hair transplant.

Dermatologists or professional Hair Restoration Surgeons are qualified to perform Hair transplantation.

FUT(Follicular Unit Transplant Service) is a standard Hair Restoration method that involves the removal of skin, probably leaving marks, whereas FUE(Follicular Unit Extraction Services) is a recently developed procedure that entails extraction of a single unit from the donor area. The risk of scars is eliminated by a minimally invasive procedure.

The entire procedure is done under local anesthesia. There is no trouble during or after surgery because proper medications will be provided to the patient.

Hair loss and alopecia are problems prevalent in both men & women. Although baldness varies from man to woman, our procedure gives the same efficient results in both cases.

Certainly not. Dermatologists only require the donor area to be trimmed which can be easily hidden by long hairs.

Harvesting of grafts

In FUE Hair Transplant Procedure, individual follicular units or grafts containing 1-4 hair in each graft are extracted from the donor area i.e., back of your scalp. Initially, extraction used to be done with the hand-operated punching method. No machinery was used earlier to extract the grafts.

The drawback of the Hair Transplant Technique was unnecessary damage to the surrounding tissues, excessive bleeding, scar formation in succeeding stages, and more time absorbing, to name a few.

Eventually, machinery came into the picture by which the technique got new advancements for Hair Restoration or Hair Loss Treatment. Nowadays, the complete procedure is done with advanced automation in which punch gets attached to that particular machinery. Using advanced Hair Restoration Techniques, the speed of extraction machinery can be easily controlled by the doctor, as every patient needs a different speed for extraction depending upon the skin texture, thickness, quality of grafts, and others.

The whole procedure of Hair Transplant is completed under local anesthesia. The patient is completely relaxed and given healthy surroundings even enjoying music while the procedure is operating. A few first pricks of local anesthesia are felt to the patient. After that, there is no pain.

Storage of grafts

After extraction, grafts are stored in Ringer's lactate solution for minimal damage.

Implantation

The surgeon then uses micro blades or fine needles to puncture the site for receiving the grafts. Every single unit is transplanted on each particular slit.

  • General medications like antibiotics, pain killers, etc, are given to the patient.
  • Wear a surgical cap for two days after the procedure.
